The only difficulty some readers might experience is the language. The writing was excellent, and I was able to actually enjoy this novel while in the hospital pre and post labor, so you can imagine it must be good. Despite this, or perhaps because of this, I found myself hoping that things would go well for him. He has the same weaknesses and human problems that allow him to make bad choices and be manipulated as easily as the next guy. This gritty story focuses on Rob, who was the child who survived, and how he slowly descends into near insanity as he investigates the current crime and tries to probe his past for any clues that might assist him. If you want a story where everything rounds out nicely and the good guy gets the good girl… prepare to be disappointed. I read my fair share of mysteries, and however enjoyable, many of them are predictable. Rob Ryan and Cassie Maddox are called in to investigate the crime. Another child is found dead near those woods, and they discover a hair clip at the scene that belonged to the missing girl of twenty years ago. The next day they find only one of the children, with blood in his shoes, and no memory of what happened. It begins with an old crime… three children go out to play in the woods and disappear. I occasionally watch true crime shows, no matter how sordid, so In the Woods was exactly what I like.
